First Baptism! This week was great! Week ending 5/19

Hey y'all! I have so much I want to write but not so much time, so I'll do my best to get the most important things in! This week was great! We had a baptism (my first) for L...!! It was such a miracle, the missionaries here had been working with her for months before me and Elder Ferrer even got here, and finally with us teaching her, she committed and this Saturday she was baptized! It was great to see that and see the smile on her face as she came out of the water. She's great!
This week we had another huge miracle. Did I already tell you about R....? The woman that stopped US in the street a week or so ago? Well this week she told us that her and her two daughers want to be baptized. They have come to every meeting, and in our lessons with them the spirit is so present and strong. They have been so prepared by the Lord to hear this message, and this Saturday, I will be baptizing them myself! R.... is 35, her daughter A... is 11, and her youngest daughter Z.... is 9. I know the Lord prepares his sheep, and I feel so blessed to be a part of this family's journey here. We did what we were supposed to be doing, and happened to be in the right place at the right time, and we were blessed huge for it!
Every Saturday we go to this great Bolivian family's olive tree orchard and chop and cut tree limbs that are too tall, and carry them to a huge pile to burn them. We do that for a few hours in the afternoon, and it's hard work! But I feel so good doing it. I feel great joy in serving the Lord's children!
A funny story from this week! So the other elders in our piso are funny. This week they tried to prank us and scare us, so me and my comp got water balloons, and we got with the ward mission leader and pulled a prank on them to pay them back! We told them we were going to meet J.... (the ward leader) by our piso at 9pm. So J.... called them to set it up, and we dropped balloons on them from the top of our building! Pretty good huh? It was better in person haha. Anyway I hope all is well at home, things are going well here and we are seeing miracles every day. I know the church is true and every day my testimony of that grows stronger. I love you all so much and will hear from you soon!

Week Ending May 5,2013 - I am in TARRAGONA not in Zaragoza.

Hey everyone!! So the first week in the field is over! Pretty crazy to be out here! First off I made a mistake last week. I am in TARRAGONA not in Zaragoza. I misunderstood when they announced it and sent you the wrong city!! It is beautiful here, right by the coast! We have one ward with about 50-55 people who come. It's not an extremely nice building, we are trying to get a new one actually! We have the money and the members, we just can't find a new place close to downtown yet! But it is good. There are 4 elders in our district, me, Elder Ferrer (from Granada, Spain), Elder Marcos (from Chile), and Elder Nacu (from Romania) and all stay in the same Piso! My companion Elder Ferrer is the district leader.

The people here are great, I love them. We have taught quite a few lessons already! I don't understand very much of what's happening...maybe like 30%? But I testify and add my two cents when I can haha. I am learning! The language thing is tough but it will come with time!

The city is great, very diverse here. ALL kinds of people and religions! A huge melting pot here for sure! It's been a crazy week, we've been going back and forth between here and Barcelona to get all my papers for residency figured out. Tomorrow and Wednesday we will be back there again! It's about an hour train ride south of Barcelona to get to Tarragona where we are.

This week we got a new investigator, her name is Laia, she is 20 years old and she is going to be baptized! Her parents are the only thing that would stop her though. Please pray that everything works out with that. Also we have a kid we are teaching named Stanley, he is from Africa, and we are trying to get him to consistently come to church and bring his little brother Jackson so he can baptize his brother, pray for them also! Church yesterday was just crazy haha! I didn't understand everything but the spirit was the same. I love that no matter where you are the church and the spirit are always consistent.

I miss you all and I hope you have a good week! I love you all!

Elder Jake is in the Mission Field! Zaragoza Spain!

Hey hey! I have made it to the field! I have been assigned to beautiful Zaragoza, Spain! My companion is Elder Ferrer, he is from Granada, Spain but speaks Engilsh too. Holy smokes it's been crazy! But I am finally here. My companion seems like he will be great. I've only known him for...3 hours now? But he is about 6´2", played basketball, really nice guy. Very cool! I'm glad I got him, everyone said he is great. I am in a small Piso with Elder Ferrer, and two other elders that speak only Spanish, they are form Peru or somewhere down there. But I just want to let you know I'm here. My p-days will be Mondays, and I am okay! I love you all! I can't wait to hear from you! I don't know how the mail thing works yet...so for now, just send letters to the mission home and they will get to me eventually. I probably won't get written letters until weeks after you send them so just a heads up! I will write you when I can though. I miss and love you all, I will let you know more on Monday! Tonight we are going to teach an English class, and go eat at a member's house who has a kid who is struggling with drugs and drinking. We are sharing a message with a video of Elder Uchtdorf talking about "Who we are." It will be interesting!! My first meeting with real people haha. But i will talk to you all soon! Goodbye until Monday!

This week a bee flew into our room

This youtube video shows Jake singing on the steps of the Mardid Temple.  He is on the right hand side, second row from the back.  Mr. Huge!  Funny thing is, I don't remember ever seeing the kid sing before...ever...not once...nada.  Here he is singing his little heart out!

Hey everyone! So this is my last week at the CCM! Pretty crazy that it's already been like a month and a half! I am excited to get out into the field though, it's going to be awesome! I will find out where exactly I'm going probably this weekend, and Monday I get to email again so I will let you know where I'm off to! Tuesday we all leave and to get to my area I will be taking a train. I'm a little nervous but very excited to really get out there! I got Mark and Niki´s package this week, tell them thanks so much and I love them and all the letters! You know me, I love getting letters and packages! It was awesome!

Here's what happened this week...really not much again, sorry! The weeks here in the MTC are the same from day to day, but of course we went to proselite again Saturday! My temporary companion was Elder Anderson, and we decided to set a goal of no more than 30 seconds of dead air space haha. We were of course talking to people constantly, and it paid off great! We went to Goya, and walking around a big city while everyone is in a hurry, it's a little more difficult to get people to listen. But we ended up with 20 contacts, passed out 7 Books of Mormon, and got 2 great referrals. One man just came up to us and showed us he already had a restoration pamflet, and wanted to know more and needed a Book of Mormon. Are you kidding me? Perfect! So we talked to him a little and got his info. We also talked to an Asian woman from a place near Taiwan that spoke English. She said her husband just passed away, she and her kids are born again Christians, they are Baptist, they know God loves them and we are his children, and after we explained the Book of Mormon, she said she knew it was by God's grace and no coincidence that we met her while she was on vacation here for one week. Pretty awesome how the Lord prepares his sheep. I'm horrible at Spanish still but I love talking to people! It's fun to just approach someone and start talking. I'm excited to get out into the field!

This week a bee flew into our room. What's the deal? Last week a huge dang grasshopper and this week a stinkin bee?! Gosh it's like our room is the garden of eden filled with all types of animal life! But y'all know I'm petrified of bees so of course that went so great when one just flew at me throught the window haha! Remember at Lake Powell when i just jumped off the boat entirely?! Too bad I was on the 6th floor here or I would've been gone! Anyway it's been a good week here, things are going well, we are all just anxious to get out into the field! I love you all and will talk to you soon!

When you whip out the questions of the soul, the soul gets curious!

Hey!  So this week wasn't too exciting, probably the least eventful week I've had here!  Just the usual schedule, classes, eating, teaching, and studying.  haha!  The language is still coming along!  My lessons with the pretend investigators are going well! I love bearing testimony and feeling the spirit take over the lessons.  This Sunday, me and my district are singing for the devotional!  Hopefully that goes well!

This week we ate swordfish again, it is my favorite meal here!  It is so good! haha.  Also last night a huge grasshopper flew into our room, and we ended up with about 15 Elders in there trying to get that flying monster of the outside world out of our sanctuary!  Is it sad that THAT was the most exciting thing that happened this week?!  I guess when you're cooped up in the same 3 floors o a building for a month and a half things change haha!;)

So this week we got 2 new Elders from Provo in our room.  One of them TOTALLY sleep talks!  At 3 am sharp, he just starts a talkin' and wakes me up!  One night it was "yeah I'll have curly fries, no mom you're not fat."  Then it was "este es el libro de Mormon, es un otro testamento de JesuCristo, no usted es estupido! Oh mi madre..."  Pretty weird! haha  Thank Goodness I don't sleep talk!  It creeps me out!  Lately we've been playing a lot of soccer during our activity time each day, I am learning! haha  Let's just say I am no Messi, but we are all awful.  All the Spanish people just stare at the Americans trying to play futbol!

So many people here just look at me like I am a freak, I am so tall! When I go into the metro, my head literally hits the ceiling in some of the places! It's funny!  The people here just aren't that tall!  I've felt the spirit really strongly this week as I have studied and prayed, and especially each P-Day at the temple.  I love learning about the gospel and reading the scriptures.  I appreciate them more each day!  The Book of Mormon is just awesome!

We also got 8 new elders from Italy, they are all pretty cool!  A few of them went through the temple for the first time today, I think that's awesome.  And they are all so pumped for the Rome temple!!  We take for granted the incredible blessing we have of having so many temples near our homes, just 30 minutes away or an hour away.  Can you imagine having just one temple in the entire country?  Or not one at all?  Take advantage of the opportunity you all have to go to the temple!  It's RIGHT THERE!  There are people waiting for you to go, don't make them wait! I love the temple so much.  There are blessings the lord has waiting for us, we just need to go get them!

Stories from the park this week!  We went and proselyted on Saturday again, and it was...interesting!  Me and my temporary companion passed out 3 Book of Mormons and talked to a lot of people.  But we just couldn't seem to get any referrals.  It was weird!  Every week before, I've had pretty good success. Hopefully next week I can find more people to share this message with!  We talked to this old guy for a while.  Wow, he was impossible to understand!  He kept telling us we are so young and we know nothing and he's old and the Bible is the only book he needs and was battling every word we said.  Then we ran into two people that said they don't even believe in God and prefer logical explanations for life.  I just said. Have you ever wondered why you're here?  Or where you're going?  What is the purpose of your life?  Those questions got them going! haha!  When you whip out the questions of the soul, the soul gets curious!!!  So I said I'm a smart guy, I like logic, and nothing makes more sense to me than the gospel.  The Book of Mormon brings us the fullness of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and all these questions are answered through the gospel. Then they got really curious about how not only we have the same questions, but I had the answers.  Of course these logic seeking people want answers.  So of course, they a took a Book of Mormon!  I ran into two people with that story, and one of them was here studying biology and genetics.  I gave him the book, and as I was walking away, I turned back and he was attentively reading already.  Pretty cool to see that. Dad!

I forgot to answer some of your questions! Okay, so real quick, I head to Barcelona the 30th of April, I believe. What do I do as a Zone Leader?  I conduct meetings, make sure everyone keeps the rules, interview the district leaders and other as needed, deal with difficult people (we have a few.)  I love the struggling people, if anyone is breaking rules I take care of it, I clean up peoples messes, lead by example, and make sure the Zone family is healthy and well!

I hope that answers all you wanted to know, I love you! Anyway I'm sorry this week's letter is a little shorter, just not much new going on here!  Once I am out in the field, I will have many more stories and experiences to share I'm sure.  I miss and love you all very much!  Tell everyone hi for me!

Have a great week! Love Elder Smith

Goya Park

Hey all! How are you doing?! Things this week were actually pretty boring. We just had our regular schedule, lots of class. The language and all is coming along alright! I always look forward to p days so i can hear from you guys and know what’s going on at home, and every p day we go to an early morning temple session. Going to the temple each week is the best! I absolutely love it.

Every day here I feel the Lord’s hand ever present in my growth and development making me into who He needs me to be. As I read your emails and receive your letters, I already see prayers being answered! We got to watch conference this week, it was great! However we aren’t watching the final session until this evening, so no I haven’t seen Elder Holland’s talk on faith yet!!! But I am pumped!! He is the best. My favorite talk by Elder Holland is "Safety for the Soul." Please go watch it! It is so powerful. Nothing better than hearing the words of the Lord through his prophets and apostles. I wish they would send an apostle here to speak to us in our little MTC! We always get to watch the recordings of old devotionals from Provo. They are still great though! I’ve seen a few friends on them singing! Kind of funny. We were watching one and they showed the piano player for the hymn, and this girl was like "That’s my mom!" and just started bawling...kind of sad! I do miss Utah, but I love it here. Spain is great! I can’t wait for you all to come and see. I will try to send some pictures but the computers here at the MTC are slow as anything!

So dad you wanted a story of us teaching our pretend investigators! It’s really not that exciting! Just lessons and testimonies. This last week we taught our "new" investigator, Ana. It was pretty cool, we got talking about the trinity and we explained that God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost are separate beings, and she was like "So what is the Holy Ghost? What form is he in? In the paintings he is a dove," and all these questions. So we continued to explain all of that, and drew it into prayer, and the importance of praying and the blessings that come from it and how the Holy Ghost testifies to us. Kind of tough with just a few weeks of the old Espanol, but when I bore my testimony and gathered up all the words my memory could put out, she just said “Wow, nobody has ever spoken to me this way with such conviction and sincerity. I can tell that these are sacred and important things.” Pretty cool coming from an "investigator" that didn’t know if she believed in God and did NOT believe in prayer or want to pray! Needless to say she prayed at the end of the lesson after I prayed for a little example. Everyone else says they have such a hard time teaching and we keep getting these great results! I’m excited for a real investigator.

So as far as news here, this week they made me a Zone Leader here in the MTC. I’m glad I have the opportunity to lead a little and serve in that spot! The food here is so weird. We have a lot of carrot soup, fish, sometimes shark, squid, pork, rice with sea urchins and clams, I guess it’s healthy though! This week we had stinkin hot dogs!!!!!! Hallelujah! Holy smokes were those good. The ketchup here isn’t as good...but i just loaded those dogs up and enjoyed some Americana comida!! Muy bien! Over here they don’t really like salt so anything in America that is salty (like ketchup) has about half the salt. So we just all add it in.

Lately we’ve been playing a lot of soccer! I’m not great, haha size 14 feet aren’t an advantage in that game;) but hey I do alright! Just so y’all know, over here instead of saying hey what up homie? Their word in Spain for homie is "trunk" like a tree trunk. All the gangsters over here call us "trunkos" haha! “Hey what up trunko?!” Kind of funny. I bet they think our words are ridiculous too!

Stories about teaching in the park: I have a great one! So Friday I got this awful cold and Saturday I woke up feeling awful. Probably the world’s worst cold. Headache, sore throat, congested like crazy, felt exhausted, it wasn’t good! But the moment I woke up on Saturday, I had this impression that I promised someone I would find them, and today was that day. Kind of weird so I said you know what? Colds are stupid and Satan just stinks, so I’m going out to Goya! (the city we go to teach in). I woke up, got some Dayquil and someone had some blue pills for colds, I just drugged up haha. So I’m feeling so bad, drugged up, exhausted, and we go to the metro. I had to get a new metro ticket so I put my debit card in the machine, and guess what?!?! It got stuck. The machine had my debit card. So we had to call someone to come and open it up and get my card etc.

We got to Goya Park finally and me and my temporary companion went out walking. It was rough! It was right during siesta time and every. single. person. we approached just denied us hard. Nobody wanted to talk to us, people ignored us, people laughed at us, it totally sucked and that went on for like an hour straight!! I had been praying all day that I would find this person I knew I was supposed to. I was just like what the heck? Everything is going wrong today. So we came to this intersection, and I just prayed and said please let me find this person to talk to. I don’t know who they are or where they are. Just please make it happen. I’m putting myself out here for them, and I don’t want to go home empty handed after all this. So we got to this intersection and my comp said which way do you want to go? Left or straight? And I said neither, we’re going right. It was this tiny, empty, road full of nothing but we took it.

About a block down, there was a woman just standing there. Not a single soul or sound around this place, but she was just standing by the street light. We approached her and I started explaining the Book of Mormon. From the beginning she was interested, so I explained what the book was, and right as I was going to have her read Moroni’s promise, her husband came up out of nowhere and joined the conversation. Turns out he is dyslexic, so perfect timing for her to read that promise aloud to them both. That guy had the light of Christ like you can’t believe! It’s so cool to just see it in people’s eyes. We explained that it was a promise from God, etc. and they said they are married in the Catholic church, but have been kind of looking and are very open to other religions and were so grateful for the free book (nothing in Spain is free so it was a big deal to them) when they said they were married, I immediately felt prompted to pull out a card with a picture of the temple. I gave it to them along with a proclamation to the family, and I just laid it out and bore my testimony to them on eternal families. Where did the words for this come from? Not me. But I did it and they felt it. They both just looked at me and said thank you so much for all of this, and I asked if they would want to know more and have some other missionaries who knew better Spanish come speak and teach them more, and they both said yes. Then the guy said we are leaving to England in two weeks, can they still talk to us? And of course I said yes! There are missionaries everywhere, we will make sure they contact you and whether you’re here in Spain or over in England, we can take your contact info and email and get a hold of you and get you with some missionaries. It was so cool. I was supposed to find that couple and I did despite my pretty bad day. If I wouldn’t have gone out, by the time I was in Goya again, they would’ve been lost in England without a Book of Mormon. It was a cool experience to find those people.

Tell Ty I love him and I wore his tie here, and that I pray for him every day. I hope he and Kim are well and I hope he is happy.  I love him and Heavenly Father does too.  Ask him how work is?  How is his new job?  Have him email me!

Well, that about sums up my week! Tell everyone I say hi and I love them and would love to hear from them! I hope you all have a great week, you are all in my prayers, I love you!
Love Elder Smith

Settling In :)

Hey guys! Holy cow am I glad it's Thursday! Okay so to answer some questions for you from your last emails! My district is 8 people! Super small but everyone's is tiny! There are between 50-60 missionaries here total, not sure how many are going to Barcelona but i think the majority are going to Madrid or Malaga. This group (mine) in the mtc right now is the biggest they've ever had over here. We are the first group to come directly from North America over here! (what he means is they are the first group to do the 9 week training in 6 weeks) Pretty cool. They told us when they picked us up from the airport we have a lot of work to do, and we need to be ready to probably be senior comps and such pretty quick out in the field. P-days are great! Every morning we go to a temple session, it is so wonderful. The Madrid temple is AMAZING. Marble and granite everywhere. The entire temple square is made of it! We also have "expeditions" in the afternoons to sightsee some of the city.

During the week we get to have physical activity every day for an hour so yes I play a lot of basketball! About 4 times a week. It is great! I've lost 8 pounds since being here and suddenly can just jump out of the gym! I almost broke a backboard at the stake center haha..nothing like a 2 hand slam! It's fun and it's fun just dominating everyone ha ha. Bball is great because it just makes me feel like I'm at home again! My companion, Elder Cluff is cool, we get along well. The names of the other elders in my district are Elder Calvin Wiley, Elder Dylan Cluff, Elder Jace Ellsworth, Elder Austin Anderson, Elder Zack Frederick, Sister Brooke Benson, Sister Ashley Hopkins.

Tell Big B I'm proud of him for the temple and mish and all! Good stuff. My schedule is pretty basic! Up at 630, breakfast at 7, class and study till 1, lunch till 2, class and study till 4, phys activity at 5, dinner 6, class again 730-930, then bed at 1030. Packages and letters only take about a week to get here so it's great! Write me lots, I love getting the letters! This week has been good, better than the first week. Things are getting a bit easier, I'm getting used to the schedule and such. Still hard being away from home, and there of course are tough times, but I'm okay! I love you guys so much and miss you all.
In response to some of your questions this week: We haven't studied much with the scriptures! A lot of language which kind of stinks...but when we have time, yes we study the Book of Mormon! We also have experiences teaching fake investigators, it is interesting! Pretty tough teaching in a language you don't know...but pretty cool too. Nobody in our district got much progress or committments, as for me? I got 2 baptism committments haha. This week we get 2 new ones so I'll see what I can do! At the park proseliting, it is great! The first week I had 25 contacts, 2 referrals, and handed out 3 books. The second week, much more stubborn people haha but about 30 contacts and gave out 2 books, and a ton of cards and such. Just planting those seeds you know! My district is great, we are all great friends now. Laugh tons and enjoy the days as much as we can! We keep each other sane haha. Yes I got your easter package! it was GREAT!!! So glad to have some good candy and letters from my lovely parents haha.
Anyway I love you guys a ton and miss you all, keep me posted on all the goings on at home and with the family, I love hearing all the details! I print off your emails each week and try to respond to them as well as I can in the short time I have, so next week I will respond more to this week's emails okay?! I love you so much.
Love, Elder Smith

PS  Easter Message.    Hi! So I'm sad I couldn't be with you to enjoy Easter, but I did have a thought to share :) I was reading in D&C 40:40,41,42,&44 and it really just stuck out to me. We are little children. Right now we cannot bear all things, we must grow in grace and the knowledge of the truth. But we don't need to be afraid: Christ is our shepherd, He is in our midst. He has overcome the world. We are they that the Father hath given Him, and none of us shall be lost if we build upon his rock, we shall never fall.
How comforting to know that when our burden gets heavy, when our trials are difficult, when life seems overwhelming or too much to bear, Christ is with us, and we need not fear. With Him, we can overcome everything, He overcame the world. Christ is with us, we have built upon His rock, and we will not fall. We will not be lost. What a perfect message and wonderful knowledge that we need never fear. We are God's children, He loves us more than we ever could comprehend and if we build upon His rock we shall never fall. Happy Easter:)
